Liverpudlians Honey Motel are back after an 18-month self induced hiatus with an absolute stomper of a track!!
It’s clear from the latest release that the band have not been just sitting on their laurels and instead have been using their time away wisely to perfect and hone their sound with an ethos on re identifying who they are as a band and with clear intentions of where they intend to go.
The come back single by Honey Motel; ‘The Matinee’ does not disappoint. It’s got it all from psych-rock sensibilities to pop infused hook lines and at the centre an indie rock heart. It’s a vibrant and versatile sound that delves into the subject matters of anxiety and apprehension brought on by the disappointment of having unfulfilled dreams brought on and fuelled by fear and it’s delivered with great care and a definite heightened level of maturity from the band.
The band have said of the track;
“The anxiety of getting stuck in the show before the show. Never taking the final step into the closing stage of something you’ve be working towards due to fear, anxiety, apprehension of what the outcome may be. The thought of forever spending eternity in the matinee is unendurable.”
The message from the track is starkly poignant for the world we live in today, with so many struggling to forge ahead given the overriding fear of failure brought on by comparison to others and what they appear to be achieving.
Although the track is musically very upbeat, Honey Motel are giving a voice to anyone who has ever felt the crushing weight of anxiety in a totally relatable fashion for all. Honey Motel see you and they stand with you!
The lyrics are cathartic with sing along choruses bursting forth set to the tone of thrashing drums, energetic guitars and soaring vocals.
If ‘The Matinee’ is anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what else the band have up their sleeves.
