Howlin’ Jaws – “Half Asleep Half Awake”

Released 1/12/2023, UK Tour in March 2023

Released on the 1st of December, 2023, Howlin’ Jaws’ ‘Half Asleep Half Awake’ is a musical odyssey that marries the nostalgic tones of rock from yesteryear with an innovative, contemporary flair. This album, emerging as a significant step forward from their debut ‘Strange Effect,’ demonstrates the band’s growth and expanding musical horizons.

Comprising Djivan Abkarian (vocals and bass), Lucas Humbert (guitar), and Baptiste Leon (drums), Howlin’ Jaws has skillfully paid homage to the rock legends of the ’60s and ’70s, such as the Beatles, Kinks and Slade, while infusing their music with a fresh, modern sensibility. Their ability to blend these influences into something uniquely their own speaks to their talent and deep understanding of the genre.

The album’s production, spearheaded by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios, adds an indispensable element of authenticity and raw energy. Watson’s expertise, notable in his previous work with The White Stripes and Tame Impala, complements Howlin’ Jaws’ sound, striking a balance between analogue warmth and a crisp, modern edge.

“Bewitched Me,” the album’s lead single, exemplifies this balance, evoking the vivacity of Supergrass and showcasing the band’s commitment to traditional recording techniques. This approach, favouring organic sound over digital perfection, allows the album’s character and warmth to shine through.

The creative shift in ‘Half Asleep Half Awake’ is partly inspired by the band’s experiences in theatre, which is evident in the theatrical and improvisational elements in tracks like “Lost Songs,” “Mindreader,” and the title track. This blend of dynamic and reflective moments adds depth and variety to the album.

“Mirror Mirror” stands out for its experimental approach, with its use of sitar-like guitars and Leslie speaker-treated vocals creating a psychedelic soundscape. The album’s exploration of diverse influences, including orientalised guitar chord progressions, marks a bold and adventurous step in the band’s evolution.

The release of ‘Half Asleep Half Awake’ has been met with critical acclaim, highlighted by the band’s feature on the front page of Rolling Stone France. This recognition is a testament to the album’s impact and Howlin’ Jaws’ growing prominence in the music scene.

Adding to the excitement, Howlin’ Jaws will be touring the UK in March 2023. This tour presents a fantastic opportunity for fans to experience the band’s dynamic live performances and to witness firsthand the powerful, emotive energy that they bring to the stage.

With this release and tour, Howlin’ Jaws not only honour their garage rock roots but also mark their place as a forward-thinking force in the contemporary music landscape.
