A punk anthem with a refreshing twist. ‘Class War’
The Menstrual Cramps burst onto the punk scene whilst on the verge of homelessness, fueled by politics and rebellion. Their debut album, “We’re Not Ovaryacting,” challenged societal norms, leading to acclaim like the 2017 LOUD WOMEN Hercury Prize (Alternative to the Mercury Prize). Their satirical take on gentrification in ‘I Like That Top’ even found its way into the BIFA Award-winning film “Sweetheart” (2021), earning them accolades in Louder Than War’s Albums of The Year 2018 and the LOUD WOMEN People’s Vote Readers’ Choice Award 2018. Closing out 2023 with a series of high-energy performances, they continue to be a driving force in punk activism.
The Menstrual Cramps, Bristol’s fiery punk sensation, have once again set the scene ablaze with their latest single release, “Class War,” accompanied by a unique twist—a craft beer of the same name. Released on March 13th, 2024, this dynamic duo of music and beverage packs a punch that’s impossible to ignore. Released by Alcopop! Records, the single is accompanied by a partnership creation of a craft beer with Manchester-based, DIY, vegan-friendly, nano-brewery Courier Brewing Company which through consumption and donation helps to raise money for akt, which helps LGBTQ+ young people to find safety and security, by providing pathways into safe housing, access to social support and assisting with routes into training and employment. Reflecting the band’s commitment to inclusivity and ethical values.

Few things in life can be condensed down into around a 3-minute timeframe, microwaving super noodles is one, reading two or three pages of a book but the most important on this list is to listen to Bristol-based punk band, The Menstrual Cramps’s latest single, ‘Class War’, a summarisation of the prominent bitter British rage that is felt, In a world where voices of marginalized communities are often sidelined. A follow-up from their 2023 return, ‘Body Politics’ and their first 2024 release, ‘Abortion’ which led to much media attention, including, Amy Lamé at BBC 6music and John Kennedy at Radio X, and the track landing on Spotify’s All New Punk playlist. The Menstrual Cramps continue to demand visibility and representation, reminding us that women’s rights are inseparable from workers’ rights.

Emilia Elfrida says: “Class War is about the importance of joining a union and holding your workplace and peers to account. Workers rights are being taken away from us at an alarming rate, and the best way to combat this is with collective bargaining and activism. It also comments on unions largely being controlled by old white men, and the push needed to move away from this. Women’s rights are workers rights. Always support strikers, and never cross a picket line!”
