“A SOULFUL AND MELODIC DITTY FILLED WITH CLEVER AND WITTY LYRICISM”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Evan Williams releases his new single Kindred Sin through Strap Originals on February 19th.

The release is lifted from his upcoming debut album The View From Halfway Down, which will be available on 12” clear vinyl and digital download.

Kindred Sin follows the single ‘Ride On’, which was playlisted by John Kennedy at Radio X and championed by the likes of Louder Than War, So Young and Still Listening Mag

Kindred Sin is an incendiary alt-rock number, with a powerful crooner-like vocal, jangly guitars, doo-wop hooks and a pummelling rhythm section. Steeped in kitchen-sink realism, this quirky ballad is a meditation on early-adulthood neurosis and its potential triggers.

Of the new single, Evan Williams says: “Finishing uni, I was very lost with what I was doing. I had no stability. I was dreaming I’d found love, but in reality I was stagnating. The line “Fuck You For Looking” speaks of flare-ups I had then, where I imagined people looking down on me. These illusions I’ve found are symptomatic of the social pressure to be someone – and be someone quickly. It’s been quite freeing to understand that the negativity that I was imagining from others is no more real than the girl in my dreams.”

The View From Halfway Down was recorded over three sessions at The Albion Rooms in Margate and produced by the esteemed Jason Stafford (The Libertines, Peter Doherty, PREGOBLIN, Trampolene).

For the album Evan Williams has embraced the power of his own narrative and over the course of 10 songs explores themes of love, loss, self-loathing and addiction. It’s a highly compelling and mature collection from a talent who belies his years. Evan, who was born and raised in Kent (Broadstairs), is merely 23-years-of-age.

Evan Williams’ first single When the Shutters Rise Again was described by GigSlutz as “a soulful, stunning debut”. This was quickly followed by Ill Stick Around, which was chosen by Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson as one of his Hidden Gems of 2022. Evan’s other releases include The DoghouseWouldnt It Be Easier and the ever-popular crowd pleaser and his biggest single release to date, The Arsonist, which features on the NBA 2K24 soundtrack.

Evan Williams has supported artists including Peter Doherty, The Libertines and Hak Baker and played Tim Peaks Diner at Kendal Calling (2023) and in November 2024 supported The Libertines at NX Newcastle and three nights at the Albert Hall in Manchester.

Evan will be playing at Jock’s Cavern in Wakefield on March 21st and on the Soundwaves stage at The Great Escape in Brighton on May 14th and will be announcing more live shows shortly.

Evan Williams band: Evan Williams (vox/piano/guitar), Rocco Marche (guitar), Sahib Dhinsa (bass) and Albie Lucas (drums).
