Twin City are an indie rock & roll band based in Bristol and are made up of Welsh brothers Louis and Toby Ellis, Pete Refson, Conor Feeney and James Wilson. In anticipation of their headline show at the Bristol Beacon on April 4th, Twin City have released their latest single I SAW GOD, via Bubblebrain records.

Those who are familiar with Twin City will be well aware of their ability to craft sonically charged anthems with no shortage of swagger. Live, the band are a force to be reckoned with and they are billed as one of the UK’s most exciting indie rock & roll bands.

On the title alone, I SAW GOD may sound like a song written about a religious awakening or divine premonition. However, I SAW GOD has nothing to do with religion and was put together after guitarist Pete fell down the stairs of a pub in Bristol. The band say, “Our guitarist, Pete, slipped and fell down some stairs in a pub in Bristol, called The Crown, and he winded himself so badly that he reckoned he saw God. We all found it hilarious, so we wrote a song about it.”

The comical context behind I SAW GOD, possibly capitalised to reflect how shook Pete was after his fall, certainly doesn’t diminish the overall effect of this song. Louis’ vocals are right at the heart of this track from the off. During I SAW GOD’s three-and-a-half-minute run time, the band grapple with themes of mortality and the passing of time. Louis sings with a declarative tone making each line memorable from the opener, ‘I saw God on a stairway, never meant that much to me’, to the ominous repeated pre-chorus line, ‘You live until the day you die.’

At points, guitars sound fuel injected as notes and hooks meld together to power I SAW GOD forward. The middle eight turnaround is particularly stirring following a searing solo. Twin City are undoubtedly an indie rock & roll band but here they tap into higher sonic plains, reminiscent of Foo Fighters’ Concrete and Gold.

Guitars, guitars, guitars. What’s not to like?

Twin City will be performing a headline show at The Bristol Beacon 4th April 2025.
