Y’know how people say that dogs tend to look like their owners? Dreams On Toast sounds like The Darkness looks. It’s silly, sexy, nostalgic and oh so CAMP. Justin Hawkins does well to summarise that much appreciated and funny self-awareness of the band himself when he sings “We never stopped making hit albums, its just that no one buys them anymore” followed by a no-nonsense, air guitar inducing solo.
There is no shortage of rock music nowadays where there are stories and alternative meanings are hidden betwixt the lines of lyrics, and that’s great. But sometimes we crave simplicity in music and this is exactly what this album provides. Now, don’t get me wrong, that’s not me saying that Dreams On Toast is a ‘simple’ album, its far from that. This album is a very welcomed, tall drink of the refreshing water that is good f*cking music. Rock n roll with no strings attached.

Unpredictable, too. It’s almost as if the boys couldn’t make their mind up on which direction the album should take, so they said “f*ck it, let’s do as many as we can fit”. It’s an enjoyable ride that you listen to and think “Oh this one sounds like AC-DC, but this one sounds like Queen” and yet all of the songs are so beautifully The Darkness. The impressive ability to resonate between the styles makes the album all the more tasty. From heavy riffs to an orchestral finish that is reminiscent of something you’d hear at the end of a 2000’s rom-com, probably staring Hugh Grant, the album doesn’t disappoint.
