Gary “Mani” Mounfield, best known as a founding member and bassist of the Stone Roses, has died aged 63.

The bass player – real name Gary Mounfield – reportedly collapsed at home, with an ambulance being called shortly afterwards. Despite medical intervention he could not be revived; Mani was 63 years old.

The British rock musician, from Manchester, rose to fame after joining The Stone Roses in the 1980s.

Playing on both of the band’s albums, Mani was a leading player in the Stone Roses until they disbanded in 1996, later joining Primal Scream.

In 2011, Mani announced that he had left Primal Scream to reform with the Stone Roses once more.

Tributes have been flooding in across the music world after the announcement of his death was made earlier on today (Thursday 20th November 2025)

In a post on Facebook his brother Greg wrote:

“IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.”

His Roses bandmate Ian Brown posted on X:

“REST IN PEACE MANI”.

Tim Burgess of the Charlatans called him

“ONE OF THE BEST IN EVERY WAY – SUCH A BEAUTIFUL FRIEND”

Liam Gallagher saidon X:

“IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO”.

Rough Trade Records also called him

“THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW A BASSIST CAN BE THE BEATING HEART OF A BAND”.

Mani had recently announced an extensive speaking tour of the UK, spanning September 2026 to June 2027, in which he promised to look back on pivotal career moments such as the Stone Roses’ 1990 gig at Spike Island and their comeback tour in 2012.

Mani was one of the most colourful characters in UK music, someone who lived and breathed the bass.

In 2023, his beloved wife, Imelda, died from cancer and we hope that Mani is now reunited with his love and that they may both now rest in eternal peace.
