Winsford-based indie rock band Skal today (27/03/26) released their latest single, ‘Waiting (To Be Free’).
This poignant yet playful track delves into the emotional complexity of loss, the fear of losing someone, and the bittersweet process of letting go. With lyrics that blend satire with grief, “Waiting (To Be Free)” navigates the heart-wrenching realization that sometimes, even when you know someone is going to leave, there’s nothing you can do but set them free. The song’s tone is a paradox: it carries an underlying sadness, but with a twist of lightheartedness that speaks to the acceptance and understanding of an inevitable goodbye.
Lyrically the track further captures the sense of impending loss, blending moments of self-awareness with resigned sorrow. Lines like, “Tell me that you’re waiting to be free, Free from these arms, they’re numb” echoes the painful truth of letting go even when it feels impossible. The use of contradictory imagery—like the lyric “I’m in charge of that wasn’t very nice”— adds layers to the song’s exploration of emotional complexity.

Despite the heavy weight of the lyricism by contrast the meldoy is rousing and upbeat with tight drum rythms and fuzzing stand alone guitar chords. There’s a certain meloncholy in the verses that is offset by the powerful, anthemic chorus hooks.
Adding to the excitement, Skal’s Liverpool headline show at Archive sold out 54 days ahead of the event, proving their ever growing presence in the UK indie scene.

Their sound is a perfect mix of The Verve, The Zutons and Kasabian and with thier live shows fans can expect a night of dynamic performances and heartfelt moments.
In addition to the new single, Skal will be performing at a series of live tour dates where fans can expect an unforgettable night of new music, raw emotion, and pure energy.
