FONTAINES D.C. SHARE NEW SINGLE – TONGUE

Following their recent trend of surprise announcements, Fontaines D.C. have shared their new single, ‘Tongue’.

The creepy and mysterious single is the second single released form their upcoming fifth studio album ‘Dopamine Chamber’. This follows on from ‘Marianne’ which dropped last month.

Guitarist Carlos O’Connell has confirmed he created the eerie and disturbed new single by pushing Grian Chatten’s vocals through a sampler to distort the pitch.

This resembles “a malicious extraterrestrial voice” over eerie guitars, piano and strings.

Bassist Conor “Diego” Deegan III provides a drowsy bassline, which has been produced by manipulating the tape speed. This technique was often used Prince and results in a loose pitched character of a sampled hip-hop bass.

‘Tongue’ is accompanied by an official music video, directed by John Angus Stewart and filmed by Fontaines D.C. in New York City.

Guitarist Conor Curley has said “We continued where ‘Romance’ left off, leaving the live-band elements until they were really needed.”

Last month, the Dublin band announced the release of their fifth album, following a series of hints and teaser via their social media channels. The two previous. ‘Romance’ years saw another meteoric rise for them, as they gained platinum certification, Grammy recognition and huge global audiences. Now, they shift their attention towards a darker, synthetic sound.

Previous single ‘Marianne’ arrived with a notable absence of the classic guitar-led urgency they used to define their early sound, as they seek to incorporate synthesisers, samples and other elements.

These other announcements have also sprung new tours. They’ll embark on a UK arena tour in November before going on their biggest tour yet, with stadium and outdoor headline shows in 2027.
