Baby Dave (aka Isaac Holman of Soft Play) joins forces with rising producer and songwriter The Works on the hypnotic new single ‘Wings’, available on all major DSPs October 2nd. The track marks the first in a series of forthcoming releases from the duo, setting the tone for an exciting new creative collaboration.
‘Wings’ is a sharp, danceable collision of alternative electronica, rave culture, disco, chillout and spoken word poetry. Holman’s distinctive delivery lends the track an alternative flair, while a melodic chorus hook adds a radiant accessibility.
Somewhere between the off-kilter world of Headache and the raw immediacy of The Streets, ‘Wings’ finds its own sweet spot – ethereal and euphoric, but physical and playful. Opening with hypnotic layers of floating vocal fragments, clipped guitars, spacious synths and resampled voices that drift across a driving dance beat, Holman’s spoken-word delivery keeps everything grounded. Moving into its distant yet infectious chorus, ‘Wings’ glides with a sense of confidence and ambience whilst delivering its impactful main hook.
‘Wings’ sits comfortably in the space between left-field experimentation and pure groove: musically intricate enough to reward listening on headphones, but direct enough to hit hard at 2am in a dark basement.
Speaking about the lyricism, Isaac Holman (Baby Dave) explains:
“The words were inspired by a moth I saw in the gym. But as the song developed, they turned into something else. The song ended up being about humans, raves, life, change and bugs amongst other things. It’s open to interpretation.”

Following on from the success of previous albums, including the Damon Albarn produced debut album Monkey Brain, ‘Wings’ is the latest collaboration between Isaac Holman and The Works, following previous work together on multiple projects including Soft Play albums and Baby Dave’s ‘Telephobia’, featuring Kate Nash, produced and co-written by Erik Miles.
Isaac Holman is best known as the vocalist and drummer of Soft Play, one of the UK’s most distinctive and uncompromising alternative acts. Alongside a huge live following, the duo have released three UK Top 10 albums and earned a Mercury Prize nomination for their debut, Are You Satisfied?. Their most recent album, Heavy Jelly, reached No. 3 in the UK Album Charts.
As Baby Dave, Holman offers another outlet for his restless creativity, exploring a more experimental and electronic side of his work. The project has earned widespread acclaim in its own right, showcasing a distinctly different side of Holman’s musicality while retaining the energy, curiosity and unpredictability that have defined his work with Soft Play.
Behind The Works is Erik Miles, a 23-year-old producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Tunbridge Wells. His growing list of credits includes Kate Nash, Soft Play, Baby Dave, Lady Bird, Mark Rae and HotWax, while Miles’ previous releases as part of electronic project Mucky Pup, received a whole host of BBC Radio 6 Music support, alongside coverage across music press.
On ‘Wings’, Baby Dave and The Works bring those worlds together. Holman’s unmistakable energy and vocal presence meet Miles’ electronic production to create something immediate, otherworldly and musically rich; a track that embraces its accessibility without losing its alternative edge.
