Yesterday (12th Nov) saw the eagerly anticipated release of the 3rd album from Liverpudlian lads Red Rum Club entitled “How To Steal The World”.
The six piece band is made up of vocalist Fran Doran, Tom Williams on lead guitar, Michael McDermott on rhythm guitar, Simon Hepworth on bass, Neil Lawson on drums and Joe Corby, on trumpet.
Right from the get-go the album has a nostalgic feel to it as the sound of seagulls fills the room and the opening bars of “Drown” blend in.
As the album moves from track to track the listener is taken on a journey with elements pertaining to Motown, Cabaret and Disco all covered and wrapped in the velvet indie glove of a Liverpudlian twang,
It’s a record jam packed with sing along choruses and intimate main vocals, delivered so effortlessly by front man Fran Doran as if he is singing to just to you!
‘Vibrate’ is a beautifully simple track with a repeated hook line and instrumental mixes that feed right into your very soul.
‘Eighteen’ is a change in pace with its slow and measured tempo and the soulful lyrics throughout. “Do you wish you could ever wake up 18?” it’s a thoughtful and emotional track from the band and is a change in pace to their usual more upbeat tempo.Indeed, Fran’s statement below would seem to agree to such:-
“We have never been more open and revealing with our subject matter than what we have with some of these songs and in a lot of ways this is the first time we’ve shown vulnerability“.
The track ‘Sweet Degrees’ in direct contrast takes on a feel good, fairground feel. Its the sort of track that you can lose yourself to, dancing the night away without a care in the world.
‘Anna Marie’ is a unifying song with its chanting lyrics of “Come Back Darling” set to an 80’s style synth vibe.
While ‘Nightcalling’ is the perfect 70’s disco track complimented by the accompanying video depicting a Ford Granada and fuelled by Fran’s apparent paranoia of his partners betrayal.
The whole album has a very laid back feel to it, its easy listening putting you in mind of summertime. It epitomises long, hot lazy summer nights spent with loved ones with not a care in the world, living in the moment of the now with the glorious gorgeousness of the music filling your senses.
“How To Steal The World” proves that Red Rum Club are back and doing what they do best; making music to groove to with a salsa beat and 80’s nightclub vibes coupled with their signature trumpet sound and relatable everyday life lyrics.
The album was recorded at Parr Street studios and Produced by Chris Taylor. The band have said of the recording experience:-
“Going into Parr Street Studios to record it was an emotional experience, it was bittersweet. We were happy to be recording this record in the studio that we have been lucky enough to call home, we felt both pride and heartbreak simultaneously at the fact that it was the last album recorded in there.“
Coming up, Red Rum Club have recently announced that they are going to be joining The Twang on their Christmas tour this December.
