In 2024 ‘Romance’ elevated Fontaines D.C.’s evolution into one of the biggest guitar bands in the world. It’s been an incredible two years with platinum certification, Grammy recognition and huge global audiences. Now, they shift their attention towards a darker, synthetic sound.
Following a period of teasers and hints, the indie heroes have announced their fifth studio album alongside new evocative, cinematic single, ‘Marianne’.
‘Marianne’ has a hazy, sinister feel to it. The song itself is born from a place of escapism and hedonism, as frontman Grian Chatten has confirmed it was part inspired by the 2024 thriller ‘Ripley’.
There’s a notable absence of the classic guitar-led urgency they used to define their early sound, as they seek to incorporate synthesisers, samples and other elements.
Chatten’s delivery plays into the contradiction of an upbeat song with uncomfortable vocals.
On first listen ‘Marianne’ might leave you searching for the guitars that used to be the Fontaines D.C. sound, whereas another listen or two allows you to hear the secret layers and the atmosphere that builds in the tensions and the space provided by the synth backdrop.
With the announcement of new album ‘Dopamine Chamber’, Chatten has described this album as a place where a listener can be subjected to mind-altering pieces of music.
It’s unclear what the new album will sound like other than ‘Marianne’ and some clips of another tune ‘Six Shot Morning’ that are doing the rounds on socials following their recent live performances.
It’s great to see their evolution, and they’re certainly a band that constantly refuse to repeat themselves. The four previous albums feel like they’ve altered the bands identity and offered something new to the table. Early indications show that ‘Dopamine Chamber’ will be following suit.
We currently live in a world where everything and everyone is competing for attention, and this album promises to cover the things we’re escaping from but also the mechanisms we are using to escape.
The Irish band appears to be suddenly rolling the album out. From two new songs in a live show, to a 30 second clip on social media and hints leading into the announcement of new music. Followed up b an album announcement landing the same time as the new single. Not to mention the album is less than 2 months away.
The album pre-orders also hint toward pre-sale access for “upcoming shows”. It’s not confirmed what these will be, but I’d assume it would be an arena tour to perform the new songs, followed by stadium tours next year, as the band seek to push to even more dizzying heights.
