FROM THE GROUND UP

“Woohoo I’m chasing white rabbits here” is the perfect opening line for the 3 minute journey ahead. The instant this beautifully, little trippy number starts you know your going to be transported into a creative world, A world lead by a collective of creatives hailing from Manchester known as HELLO COSMOS. Fronted by Kendal Calling and Bluedot Festivals founder Ben Robinson, their latest offering makes me feel like I’m sat in a room with Mike Skinner, Black Grape, Sleaford Mods and John Cooper Clark, having a nice cup of mushroom tea all pinging ideas across at each other while Whipping Piccadilly by Gomez plays on an old 45” in the background.

FROM THE GROUND UP is taken from the collectives forthcoming EP ‘GOLDEN DIRT’ a lockdown mixtape collaboration between Ben Robinson and San Francisco based producer The Olchemist [aka Linton Brown] who also worked on the bands highly acclaimed 2021 album ‘Dream Harder’. With Louder Than War labelling the bands debut as one of their albums of the year and gaining the support of BBC 6 Music, Radio 1 and Radio X .

Lyrically interesting and steeped in surreal humour all inspired by the worlds want to just escape the boredom of lockdown. “Let me just go round my mates, before i loose it” a lyric we can all relate to strongly after the last 12 months, is only one example of the story being told in this track. “on the evening news in my underpants” my personal favourite line in the song btw, depicts the madness we have all felt at one point in our lives lockdown or not. Speaking about the track’s core themes, Robinson says:

“‘Golden Dirt, champions of the hurt’ was a lyric from a track I did a while ago that didn’t get finished, it seemed to define the sentiment I feel about all the people I love and what is true of these times. We are all champions, we are all hurt, and as the saying goes ‘no mud no lotus’…  from s**t comes beautiful flowers. That’s where we are all going next so stay positive, the coming years are going to be like nothing we have ever known.”

Ben, on bass is joined by the talented Angela Chan on viola/synth and vocals. Angela being a member of the Mercury-shortlisted Lanterns on the Lake as well as being a touring member of indie giants Placebo. Alongside them on drums Ben’s brother Simon Robinson, a powerhouse and the uniquely styled Adrian Ingham on guitar all join together as “A meeting of minds of telepathic harmony with immense capability”

FROM THE GROUND UP is available now on all streaming platforms and if this track is anything to go by I’m pretty damn keen to get my ears on the upcoming “Golden Dirt” EP.
