MICHAEL AFTERNOON

This has an interesting feeling to it, very 1960’s…. Is that a mellotron that I hear? Used extensively by artists of that period, very mind warping as it is a keyboard instrument playing sounds like choirs, flutes strings recorded on tape. Used famously on “Strawberry Fields Forever” by Liverpool’s finest… Almost like a very early version of a sampler. Michael Afternoon whisks you off into a headspace of psychedelia, with vocals that are harmonised in such a cool way, all of it performed by Tom McConnell bar the drums, played ably by Jan Simpson..

The accompanying video is partly animated, very cleverly done, there’s a funny section in the video that shows talking heads – him dressed up as the presenters of breakfast tv which made me laugh. It’s got the shot on VHS feel to it, staying with pop culture and shot in partially psychedelic colours.

It’s quite a trip!

All in all a great track, from his forthcoming album “How Are You Coping With This Century?” available on 14th October 2021.

Spoiler alert, check out “Listen” too.
