Hollows are a 3-piece Alternative Rock band from Manchester consisting of frontman Sean
Davies, drummer Dan Dyson and bassist Jack Barnes. The current line-up was formed in
2021 however the band have been releasing a steady stream of singles and EPs since 2019.
Davies believes the current line-up have forged the band’s identity and they now have a
sound that they can be proud of.
Since 2021, Hollows have been able to reliably combine polished melodies with hard-hitting
vocals, earning the band a sell-out show and recognition from the likes of Radio 6’s Steve
Lamacq and Radio X’s John Kennedy.
However, their latest single, History, released via Revolver Records, is perhaps the most
obvious signpost yet of the band’s intention to delve into a more expansive space whilst also
tackling serious subject matter.
History is just over 3 minutes long and covers the topic of domestic abuse and, from the
beginning, the track is rife with imagery of overcoming adversity and finally being free. The
bright guitar led intro retracts as Davies declares, “I won’t say sorry anymore” and later “The
past is the past and I can’t change that.”
As he moves through the verses Davies purposefully wrestles against the melody
desperately trying to be heard. Each smack of Dyson’s snare and twang of Barnes’ bass
sounds like a prisoner banging on the walls of their cell, in a last-ditch effort to be free.
In the chaos of thrashing guitars and pulsating drums during the track’s several choruses,
Davies can no longer carry the burden of being a victim. He disregards any lingering feelings
of fear and unleashes a torrent of emotions on the abuser. His voice strains through anger
and pain but through his challenge hope is inspired. The bright hook returns before a series
of searing solos bring the song to its crescendo.
Since the release of History, Hollows have pledged to donate £50 per 1000 streams during
the first month of the track’s release to a charity supporting victims of domestic abuse.
Davies’ lyrics, “I used to love your legs, ‘til they tried to kick me down the stairs” serve as an
important reminder for us all to continue supporting one another in the fight against hate.
2024 has been a busy year so far for Hollows who have not only played a number of shows
in the UK, including Party in the Pews in Macclesfield, but also played an impressive number
of shows at the New Colossus Festival in New York City and SWSX in Austin, Texas.
Hollows play upcoming headline shows at The Jacaranda Club, Liverpool, on June 8th and
Lions Den, Manchester, on July 5th.
