RILEY MARSH – MAYBE IT’S THE RAIN – SINGLE REVIEW

Riley Marsh’s latest single is a masterclass in building tensions and is testament to the arrival of his new sound.

As he makes strides towards becoming a household name, he perfectly captures the heavy downpour melancholy experienced in those sudden instances, as captured in the tracks suspense.

This feels like a statement step into a new direction, shaking off the bedroom-folk sound, in trade of a heavier indie-rock feel.

The track still has its sensitivities however, as it opens with an intimate focus that builds slowly into a wall of guitars, reminiscent of the 90s “quiet-to-loud” sounds often found in Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins hits.

Recorded at The Grove, Nottinghamshire, producer Cam Worne has excelled in providing the instruments breathing room. Marsh is joined by Art Marshall on drums and Alfie Reeves on bass guitar in this self-written composed song.

Talking of the track, Riley said: “I wrote this song about a close friend who was going through a rough patch. The ‘rain’ in the song represents the things they were struggling with and how it can take over. It’s the most honest and open music I’ve ever written, it was one of those songs that just happened.”

Having been heavily featured on BBC Introducing in the East Midlands, with regular plays and opportunities coming from Dean Jackson such as Opening up the 3500 capacity Venue, Vaillant Live in Derby for BBC Introducing, Riley has also played Festivals such as Y-NOT, Dot to Dot, Eyes Have It, Gate To Southwell and Beat The Streets Festivals.

Further accomplishments include supporting The Rosadocs at The Loft in Matlock, supporting Martin Harley (the well known UK Americana Blues artist) and supporting former Inspiral carpets lead singer Tom Hingley on various occasions. Most recently Riley supported Reverend and The Makers at their own album launch.
